NIPE researcher distinguished with the EEG Research Award

Linda Veiga, NIPE researcher and full professor at the School of Economics and Management (EEG), University of Minho, was distinguished with the EEG Research Award 2022 of University of Minho, for the publication of the article “Local labor impact of wind energy investment: An analysis of Portuguese municipalities”, in the Journal Energy Economics, in co-authorship with Hélia Costa.
The award is given by the School of Economics and Management (EEG) to an EEG’s professor or researcher, author of the article with the most votes by the Presidents of the Scientific Councils of the principal Schools and Faculties of the country in the areas of Economics, Management, and Political Science.

The study investigates the existence, distribution, and duration of the impacts of wind energy investment on the local labour market. Using data from 278 mainland Portuguese municipalities over 21 years (1997 to 2017), the findings indicate that the impact affects mostly male, unskilled workers, and local markets and that the long-term positive impact on local finances did not translate into employment. (See more here)
