NIPE researcher distinguished with the António Simões Lopes 2020 Award for his doctoral thesis

Izzat Ramadan was awarded with the António Simões Lopes 2020 Prize for the best doctoral thesis presented at Portuguese universities

The researcher from the Centre for Research in Economics and Business Policies (NIPE) and alumnus of the School of Economics and Management of the University of Minho, Izzat Ramadan, was distinguished with the António Simões Lopes 2020 Award, awarded by the Portuguese Economists’ Association and PwC to the author of the best doctoral thesis in Economics presented at Portugal last year.
The awarded thesis “Three essays on financial literacy and financial behavior”, was defended in his PhD in Business Administration, carried out at the School of Economics and Management, under the guidance of Manuel Rocha Armada and Cristiana Leal, also NIPE researchers and professors at the Management Department.

Izzat Ramadan’s study falls on three essays on literacy and financial behavior. In these essays, it is revealed that there are positive effects when these two variables come together and the creation of public policies and financial education plans for different groups is suggested, taking into account gender, country, religion, family structure and profile. of the citizen in order to improve their performance. The thesis demonstrates that the financial behavior of a given person has as its main determinant their financial literacy, which, however, depends on financial socialization with parents, impatience, confidence and risk aversion, among other aspects.

The distinction was delivered during the 9th National Congress of Economists, at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, in Lisbon.
