NIPE hosts the EPCS 2022

The 2022 Annual Meeting of the European Public Choice Society (EPCS 2022) was held at the University of Minho, in Braga, Portugal, on April 11-14.

The European Public Choice Society Conference promotes scientific research on the economics and politics of public and non-market decision-making, political economy, and the economics of institutions. The annual meeting brings together about 300 researchers with a shared interest in Public Choice.

The Local organizing committee was composed by six NIPE researchers – Francisco Veiga (chair), Linga Veiga, Helia Marreiros, Luís Aguiar-Conraria, Odd Straume, and Ricardo Sousa – and by Iolanda Vieira, of the NIPE’s staff. Additional NIPE and EEG staff, and several students, also collaborated in the organization of the event.

The EPCS2022 featured three plenary sessions by the Keynote speakers Johanna Rickne (Stockholm University, Sweden), Massimo Morelli (Bocconi University, Italy), and Nuno Garoupa (George Mason University, USA). 230 papers were presented in 76 parallel sessions by researchers from 26 different countries. The event was also marked by a rich social program, which provided opportunities for leisure.

Each year, the EPCS awards The Wicksell prize, in honor of the Swedish economist Johan Gustaf Knut Wicksell, to the best paper by authors younger than 30 years of age. The Wicksell prize is generously sponsored by the European Journal of Political Economy published by Elsevier. This year’s Wicksell prize winner was Marcel Steffen Eckardt for the paper “The political economy of automation and task-specific taxes”.
