Francisco Carballo-Cruz, NIPE researcher and Professor at the Department of Economics, coordinated a study on the economic impact of the Spanish supermarket chain Mercadona in Portugal.
The study was developed in collaboration with the Instituto Valenciano de Investigaciones Económicas (IVIE) and analysed the impact of the Spanish company (which established the Portuguese company Irmãdona Supermercados, in order to operate in the country), regarding sales, income, employment and public revenues, for the period between 2019 and 2022. This quantification considered not only the direct but also the indirect impacts generated by the company’s activity throughout its value chain.
The report produced within the scope of this study demonstrates that Mercadona was responsible for significant economic, sectoral and territorial impacts in Portugal and that the expected expansion of the company will continue to be of great relevance.
