Fernando Alexandre, the new Minister of Education, Science and Innovation

The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, swore in the Minister of Education, Science and Innovation, Fernando Alexandre, at the swearing-in ceremony of the XXIV Government, which took place at the Ajuda National Palace in Lisbon on April 2, 2024.

Fernando Manuel Almeida Alexandre holds a PhD in Economics from the University of London, Birkbeck College. He is an Associate Professor at the University of Minho, vice-president of the Economic and Social Council and a consultant for the Francisco Manuel dos Santos Foundation. At the University of Minho he was Pro-Rector, President of the School of Economics and Management and Director of the Economics Department. He was Assistant Secretary of State to the Minister of Internal Affairs in the 19th Constitutional Government. Author or coordinator of eight books on the Portuguese economy and articles published in international scientific journals, and principal investigator or member of research teams on four projects funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology. He has worked as a consultant for public and private entities such as the European Commission and the Portuguese government.
