Abstract

How do monetary policy decisions reach households? We study this question by combining novel high-frequency measures of the information households receive about European Central Bank (ECB) policy decisions with daily household survey data from France, Germany, and Spain. We document substantial variation across policy meetings and countries in both the amount and content of information reaching households. We find that several dimensions of coverage emphasized as potentially important in recent research are frequently present in practice. We then examine whether this information environment shapes households’ awareness of the ECB and their expectations. Households are more likely to report having heard about the ECB following policy meetings when media attention is greater. Exposure to ECB coverage is associated with changes in household expectations, but we find no evidence that these responses are driven by the specific dimensions of coverage emphasized in recent studies (preliminary).
